The tech giants Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft and Google accounted for one in 12 of non-EU work permits issued by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment so far this year.

Of the 9,526 permits issued between January and August, the five companies accounted for 785 of them. The retail giant Amazon received the most permits — 357 across its various businesses.

Employment permits are issued to workers from outside the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland. Employers must carry out a labour market needs test before applying and more than half of their staff must be from the EU.

There were 2,226 companies issued with the permits this year, with all the country’s big hospitals using the scheme.
