Pinterest has announced the launch of a new tool called ‘Pinterest Trends‘ which will provide insight into the most popular search terms on the platform over the preceding 12 months, as well data on when the top searches peak throughout the year, in order to help marketers with their campaign planning.

As explained by Pinterest:

“Over 320 million people around the world use Pinterest to get inspired – from finding meals they’re going to cook, to figuring out what to wear or how to style their homes. More than 200 billion ideas have been saved to over 4 billion boards to-date on the platform, providing insights into emerging trends and early signals into consumer behavior and evolving tastes.” 

Pinterest Trends will help marketers tap into this data. The tool is essentially like Google Trends, but Pinterest-specific, which, given the app’s eCommerce focus, could actually make it more indicative of shopping habits in each area, as opposed to more general search behavior.

Indeed, research shows that some 90% of weekly Pinners use the app to make purchase decisions, and with the platform now rising above 320 million monthly active users, the value, and relevance, of its trend data could be significant.

As of right now, Pinterest Trends is in limited beta, with Pinterest planning to make it more widely available to users in the US ‘in the coming weeks’. You can apply to Pinterest for early access, but we’ll also keep you updated on the broader toll out of the tool.

Pinterest has this week released a new update on its efforts to employ a more diverse and inclusive range of people within its organization, and the impacts that those efforts have had on its product decisions. 

As explained by Pinterest:

“It’s hard to feel inspired when you don’t feel represented – online or in your workplace – and research shows that diverse teams make us more creative, diligent and hard-working. When we are building products, a team of people with different backgrounds enables us to think through products, policies, and safety from all angles (for instance, how products could be abused or how they could unintentionally impact a community).”

Pinterest has set a range of targets on staff diversity, and it says that, for the most part, it’s now meeting those aims:

  • We wanted to increase hiring rates for full-time women engineers to 25% and surpassed it with a new high of 27%
  • We wanted to increase hiring rates to 8% underrepresented* minority engineers and exceeded it at 9%
  • We wanted to increase hiring rates for underrepresented minority employees across the company (business and product) to 12% and exceeded it at 14%

This increased focus on diversity has lead to some significant, inclusive product developments, including improved user wellbeing policies, the creation of a gender transition guide for organizations, and the implementation of a ‘skin tone’ search qualifier to hone in on more relevant search results.

With this in mind, stylish sunnies are just one of many popular pet fashion trends. And, now that temperatures have dipped for the frosty season, Pinterest has revealed some of the most highly sought-after pet attire trends for 2020.

The company notes that searches for pet fashion are up a whopping 199% on its platform, and that, “right now Pinners are looking for the best winter outfits for their fur babies.” 

While fleece coats are popular with humans, the social media platform notes that they are very popular trend with furbabies, too. Searches for fleece dog coat are up 141%. What’s more, Pinterest remarks that crafty canine owners are also searching for dog coats pattern free”, with searches for the DIY style up 75%.

Small dog sweater searches are up an impressive 213%, with large dog sweaterup 63%. 

Pinterest also discovered that the Canadian tuxedo is a popular look with pooches, too. Dog denim jacket searches are up 30%, and classic jean jackethoodie or studs and patches were popular as well. The company remarks that, “your dog has never looked cooler.” 

And, of course, owners of hairless cats were mindful of their vulnerable felines in the cold. Hairless cat sweater searches are up 25%, and Pinterest suggest a number of, “ luxurious looks  they deserve.”
